Chapter Eight
Officially a Dark Moth
I showered and put on my Dark Moth uniform, admiring the insignia above my right breast as I stared in the mirror. Haven had somehow captured the colors of the seven deadly sins, but what was even more incredible was the subtle glint of silver throughout. It was remarkable.
My blue eyes seemed brighter than normal, I noticed as I studied my reflection. Or it couldâve been because the dark circles under my eyes were making them pop. I braided my hair out of my face. Then I tucked the demon orb in my boot along with my blade. My uniform was a form-fitting jumpsuit made of a smooth material that I knew consisted of organic armor created from elven magic. The problem? There wasnât a place to tuck my gun. I would have to get a thigh strap, which didnât excite me since I preferred to keep my gun hidden. Frustrated, I returned it to my dresser before making my way to the assembly hall.
Upon entering, I realized every seat was full, causing the overflow of people to take a place along the walls. I made my way over to the stairs. The other seven councilmembers, including Wrythe, were already there. They spoke to each other, standing in a circle.
I tried not to focus on the pang of awkwardness that automatically filled my chest. Perhaps with them, I wouldnât be an outcastâthe Queen of Heartsâthe way Iâd been with the trainees. Hope urged me up the steps to the stage. One of the new councilmembers, Pratt, noticed me, giving me a once over. A smirk lifted one side of his mouth. From what Iâd read and heard of Pratt, he was definitely prideful and tended to brag about his incredible hunting skills, but his boasting was justified. He was also loyal and wouldnât give up a fight easily. In all of his demon hunting expeditions, his team had only lost one battle and that wasnât because the demon didnât die. It did, but so had one of his teammates. Still, I didnât appreciate the way he was ogling me. Embarrassment trickled through my veins.
Great first impression, I thought, debating whether to run back to my room. Each of the others wore formal attire, suits or dresses as they preferred, the colors representing their demon sire. Pratt wore a deep purple three-piece suit with a white shirt and a lavender tie. Under his gaze, I paused. Why had I worn my damn uniform? I shouldâve put on the beautiful black dress Haven made me. That wouldâve been much better.
I stopped, debating whether I had to time rectify the situation.
âAlice,â Wrythe called, leaving the group and walking across the stage. He gave me a once over and I felt my bottom lip quiver. âYou look⦠amazing,â he said, touching my arm.
My face warmed. âI shouldâve worn something else.â He had on a black suit with a red shirt open at the collar. Handsome, regal and gorgeous.
âNo, youâre perfect. Youâll stand out and be remembered, as you should be.
